Your applications, and what the statuses mean

Where your applications live, what each status actually tells you, when to withdraw, and the two settings that decide whether the right roles reach you at all.

3 min readWritten for: Anyone applying for roles and waiting to hear back

What you will learn

  • Where to find everything you have applied to
  • What each status means, and which one is set automatically
  • When withdrawing is the right move
  • The two things that decide whether good roles reach you

Everything you have applied to, in one place#

Your applications page lists every role you have applied for, with its current stage and when it last moved. You do not have to remember which company you sent what to, and you are not relying on your inbox to tell you.

  • Filter by status so you can see only what is still live
  • Open any application to see the role and company as they were when you applied
  • Withdraw one if you have taken something else

What the statuses actually mean#

Employers move you through these. You see the same stage they do, which is the point - you are not guessing whether anyone opened it.

StatusWhat it tells you
AppliedIt arrived. Nobody has opened it yet.
ViewedSomebody on the hiring side has read it. This one is set automatically.
ScreeningBeing checked against what the role needs.
InterviewingYou are in the process.
OfferedAn offer has gone out.
HiredAccepted.
RejectedNot going forward. It can happen at any stage.
WithdrawnYou pulled out. Only you can set this.

Good to know

Viewed is the only status that changes without a person deciding something. So an application sitting at Applied for two weeks has genuinely not been opened - which is more useful to know than it is pleasant.

Withdrawing, and when it is worth doing#

Withdraw when you have accepted something else or decided against the role. It is the one status only you can set, and it takes you out of a pipeline you have left - which costs the employer time and costs you nothing to prevent.

The two things that decide what reaches you#

Most people who feel the job feed is empty have one of these two problems, and both take ten minutes to fix.

  • Your skills. Matching reads the skills on your profile against the skills on a posting - the more of a posting's requirements you list, the higher it ranks for you. An empty skills list produces an empty feed and looks like the platform is broken
  • A saved alert. Save one narrow search rather than checking by hand. Instant, daily or weekly - daily is right for almost everything

Tip

Before applying anywhere, open the posting and look at the skill gap and at who you already know at that company. Both are on the job page, and an application that starts as an introduction is a different application.
