Plans, Billing and Subscriptions
Almost the entire portal sits behind an active subscription. This page covers taking a plan, what upgrading and downgrading actually do, and why Billing is the one screen that never locks.
What you will learn
- What works without a subscription and what does not
- Taking your first plan
- The difference between an upgrade and a downgrade
- Reading the cycle, renewal date and billing history
- What happens when a module is not in your plan
What a subscription unlocks#
Deal Room, Deals, Applications, Portfolio, Analytics and Disbursements all need an active plan. Two screens deliberately stay open without one: Profile, so founders can still find you and you can keep your details current, and Billing, so you have somewhere to go and fix it.
Good to know
Locking Billing behind a subscription would leave an unsubscribed organisation with no way to subscribe. It is open on purpose - if you are locked out of everything else, that is where to go.
Taking a plan#
- 1
Compare what the plans contain
The tick list on each card is the real difference. A cheaper plan usually differs by one or two modules - check whether they are ones you need.
- 2
Subscribe
This opens a payment checkout. Nothing changes until the payment completes.
- A subscription sits as Pending until payment is confirmed.
- A toast saying the plan was placed is not the same as the plan being active.
- 3
Confirm it went active
The page should show your plan with a cycle start, a next billing date and days remaining. If it still says Pending, the payment did not complete.
Careful
Individual investors subscribe exactly the same way - the subscription belongs to you rather than to an organisation, but the screen and the flow are identical.
Upgrading and downgrading#
These are not symmetrical, and the difference catches people out.
- A queued change is shown on the plan card, so you can see what is coming.
- You can cancel a queued change before it takes effect.
- Cancelling the subscription itself can be set to happen at cycle end rather than immediately.
| When it takes effect | What you pay | |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade | Immediately, once the payment clears. | A prorated amount for the rest of the cycle, paid at checkout. |
| Downgrade | At the end of the current cycle. | Nothing now. The cheaper plan starts when the paid period ends. |
Tip
Downgrading does not free up money today and does not take features away today. If you are trying to reduce what a plan covers before a renewal, do it early enough that the cycle actually turns over.
When a module is not in your plan#
Modules outside your plan appear padlocked in the sidebar, and opening one directly shows an upgrade card rather than silently bouncing you somewhere else.
- The sidebar padlock reads 'Not included in your plan - upgrade to unlock'.
- The page itself explains that upgrading adds the module for everyone whose role allows it.
- Compare plans takes you straight to Billing.
Important
Do not confuse this with the investor-type lock. 'Not included in your plan' can be fixed by upgrading. 'Not available on your investor type' cannot.
Billing history#
The page keeps the recent billing rows alongside the current plan, so the finance question - what did we pay and when - is answered on the same screen as the plan itself.
- Cycle start and next billing date
- Days remaining in the current period
- Cycles paid against the committed term
- Recent invoices and their status
Common questions#
Check whether the subscription is Active or still Pending. Placing a plan creates a checkout; until the payment is confirmed nothing unlocks.
Whoever holds billing permission on their role. Managing Partners have it by default; analysts and observers do not.
The plan unlocked it for the organisation; their role still has to grant it. Check Roles.
No. Investor plans and incubation plans are separate catalogues, and you are only ever shown yours.
You drop back to Profile and Billing only. Your data is not deleted - the pipeline and portfolio are waiting when you resubscribe.
